Hungarian highway vignette: D1 passenger car fee category

Most of Hungary's highways are toll roads, which can be paid for with an electronic highway vignette. The e-vignette must always be purchased before driving onto the toll road, as a network of cameras is set up to check whether the vehicle has a valid road use permit.

Depending on the type of vehicle, highway vignettes can be purchased in four different fee categories: D1, D1m, D2 and U. The most common e-vignette fee category is D1, as this is the category for passenger cars.

Vehicles in the D1 fee category

In the official entries in the vehicle registration certificate*, the letters "J "and "S.1." fields in the vehicle registration document will be used to determine the fee category to which the vehicle belongs.

The following fields and their contents must be taken into account in our registration certificate for category D1:

• Field "J":

  1 - The field 'J' refers to the category of the vehicle and the M1 coding covers passenger cars.

• "S.1." Field:

  up to 7 - The field "S.1." field indicates the number of persons the car is suitable for carrying, including the driver's seat, up to 7 persons for D1.

Hungarian highway vignette prices change from year to year, and in 2024 they will be as follows for the D1 passenger car category:

Daily, weekly (10-day), monthly, county and yearly e-vignettes are also available in the D1 fee category. But let's see what you need to know about them!

Daily (1-day) highway vignette

The one-day e-vignette is valid from the moment of purchase until 23:59 on the day of purchase for all toll roads in Hungary. For advance purchases, it is valid from 0:00 to 23:59 on the selected day.

Weekly (10-Day) Hungarian E-vignette

The weekly highway vignette also entitles the holder to use all toll roads in Hungary and is valid for the starting date indicated by the purchaser and for a further 9 days, for a total of 10 consecutive calendar days, until 23:59 on the 10th day.

Monthly and several months highway vignettes

Monthly e-vignettes are valid on all toll roads in Hungary from the starting date indicated by the customer until 23:59 on the day corresponding to the starting date of the following month; if this day is missing in the month of expiry, until 23:59 on the last day of the month. The several months vignette can also be a cost-saving solution, as it provides up to +4-6 days of additional entitlement on top of the monthly entitlements.

County highway vignette

Unlike the other vignettes, the county vignette has territorial limits, as it is only valid within the county you have purchased and up to the first junction in the direction of the bordering counties. The advantage is that it can be bought at a favourable price and is valid until 31 January of the year following the year in question, so you can travel for up to 13 months for as little as HUF 6 660.

National highway vignette

It is valid until 31 January of the year following the year in question, so if you buy a vignette during a pre-purchase or in January, you can use it for up to 13 months on all toll roads in Hungary.
