M1 Regional Hungarian highway vignette
Hungary’s expressway network is continuously developing and expanding; however, the heavy traffic on the M1 highway has made its expansion necessary. Preparatory work for this began in the autumn of 2024, while actual on-site construction work started on September 1, 2025.
The development will take place in several phases, and although 2x2 lanes will remain available for traffic throughout the project, lane shifts and speed limits may still cause difficulties for drivers. In the first phase, the section between M0 and Bicske will be expanded to 2x3 lanes with an intelligent emergency lane, with a scheduled completion date at the end of August 2028.
To mitigate the inconveniences caused by the construction works in Hungary, a new highway vignette scheme has been introduced from 2026, available as an M1 regional vignette and offered at a previously unprecedented, discounted price.
