From January 1, 2026, all motorhomes will be subject to the e-vignette system in Hungary
2026. 01. 14. 10:08
Starting January 1, 2026, a significant change will take effect regarding the use of Hungarian roads by motorhomes. The amendment of Government Decree 45/2020 (XI. 28.) by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology introduces that all motorhomes will fall under the e-vignette system, regardless of their maximum permissible gross weight. This means that using Hungary’s toll road network – including highways, expressways, and certain main roads – will only be legal with a valid e-vignette for motorhomes.
The goal of this change is to create a more unified and transparent toll system, and to ensure that motorhome usage follows clearly defined rules across Hungary.
What changes for motorhomes from January 1, 2026?
The most important change is that the HU-GO toll system will no longer apply to motorhomes. Previously, motorhomes with a gross weight over 3.5 tons were required to use the electronic toll system (e-toll), but from January 1, these vehicles return to the e-vignette system. As a result:
- On-board units will no longer be required
- Instead of route-based tickets, a highway vignette must be purchased
From 2026 Onward:
- All motorhomes will need an e-vignette to use toll roads
- Road use monitoring will follow the rules of the e-vignette system
Which motorhomes belong to D1 or D2 toll categories?
It is important to note that the toll category is not determined solely by the vehicle's weight. Classification is based on the data in the vehicle’s registration certificate, especially the following fields:
- J – vehicle category
- F.1 – maximum permissible gross weight
- S.1 – number of seats (including the driver)
D1 Category
A motorhome qualifies for the D1 category if:
- The vehicle category is M1 or M1G
- The gross weight is no more than 3.5 tons
- The number of seats (including the driver) is no more than 7
D2 Category
A motorhome falls into the D2 category in the following cases:
- It has more than 7 seats
- It is in M1 or M1G category, but the weight exceeds 3.5 tons
- It belongs to category N1 or N1G, regardless of its weight
In practice, this means that even a motorhome under 3.5 tons may fall into the D2 category if the registration data justifies it.
For example, a motorhome designed for 9 people but weighing less than 3.5 tons still requires a D2 highway vignette.
Motorhome vs. caravan – What’s the difference?
Simply put:
- A motorhome is a self-propelled vehicle
- A caravan is a towed trailer
- In terms of the above regulations, a highway vignette is always required for motorhomes when entering toll road sections.
For caravans, the vignette requirement depends on the towing vehicle:
- If the towing vehicle is in the D1 category, no separate vignette is needed for the trailer – only for the towing vehicle.
- If the towing vehicle is in the D2 category, then a U-category vignette must be purchased for the caravan as well. In this case, both the towing vehicle and the trailer must have valid vignettes.
This rule remains unchanged in 2026. However, with motorhomes now included in the e-vignette system, determining the correct toll category is especially important.
Summary
From January 1, 2026, the HU-GO system no longer applies to motorhomes, and all such vehicles must have a valid e-vignette. Choosing the correct toll category remains critical, as incorrect classification may result in a penalty.
