Speed Limits and Speed Measurement in Hungary

2023. 09. 28. 12:07:57

In Hungary, there is a so-called VÉDA intelligent road camera network in place. It doesn't only monitor drivers who break the rules, cars without a technical inspection, or speeders, but it also checks if the car has a motorway vignette. This is monitored based on the license plate number, so it's crucial to always provide the correct license plate and vehicle category when purchasing a vignette.

These installed cameras are not only found on highways but on any road, as it's essential for road safety to identify those who break the rules. It's advisable to avoid penalties, as the fines can be hefty, especially if caught speeding.

Changes from 2023

In the spring of 2023, the Hungarian legislation on speed measurements changed, according to which the legally accepted speed is always the exact value detected by the camera, so the method of a margin has been abolished. If you exceed the speed limit or commit an offence, you can expect the following police measures: a verbal warning, a fine or a report of an offence.

Speed Limits on Hungarian Roads

For passenger cars, motorcycles, and vehicles not exceeding a total weight of 3500 kg:

  • On motorways: 130 km/h
  • On main roads: 110 km/h
  • Outside inhabited areas, on other roads: 90 km/h
  • Within inhabited areas: 50 km/h

For buses that meet specific regulatory requirements:

  • On motorways: 100 km/h
  • Outside inhabited areas, on other roads: 70 km/h
  • Within inhabited areas: 50 km/h

For other vehicles, as well as for vehicle-trailer combinations:

  • On motorways: 80 km/h
  • Outside inhabited areas, on other roads: 70 km/h
  • Within inhabited areas: 50 km/h

While observing these rules, don't forget about your Hungarian motorway vignette to ensure penalty-free travels!
