Travelling on Hungarian motorways by motorhome: tips for a safe and cost-effective journey

Travelling by motorhome gives you freedom, which is why it is a popular way to travel during the summer season. However, driving on motorways in a motorhome is a completely different experience from driving a passenger car, as the larger size, higher centre of gravity, fuel consumption and route planning are all factors worth preparing for in advance.
In this article, we have collected what to pay attention to when driving a motorhome on motorways in Hungary, which Hungarian highway vignette you need to buy, how much the different validity periods cost, and what to watch out for when towing a trailer or caravan.
What speed can you drive at on Hungarian motorways with a motorhome?
When travelling by motorhome, the goal is not necessarily to drive at the maximum permitted speed. Before travelling, it is always advisable to check the current speed limits in the destination country, as these may depend on the motorhome’s gross vehicle weight, category and any trailer being towed.
In Hungary, motorhomes may generally expect the following maximum permitted speeds on motorways; however, posted road signs must always be followed:
- With a motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes: up to 130 km/h.
- With a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes: up to 80 km/h.
What highway vignette do you need for a motorhome in Hungary?
From 2026, all motorhomes can use Hungary’s toll road network through the e-vignette system. This also applies to motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes: they do not need a HU-GO route ticket or an on-board unit, but the appropriate D1 or D2 e-vignette.
The e-vignette category of a motorhome must be determined based on three details shown in the vehicle registration certificate:
- Field J: vehicle category;
- Field F.1: maximum authorised mass;
- Field S.1: number of seats including the driver.
D1 Hungarian highway vignette for motorhomes
A motorhome belongs to toll category D1 if all of the following conditions are met at the same time:
- J - vehicle category: M1 or M1G
- F.1 - maximum authorised mass: up to 3.5 t
- S.1 - number of seats including the driver: up to 7 people
D2 Hungarian highway vignette for motorhomes
A motorhome falls into category D2 if any of the following apply:
- M1 or M1G category, but with more than 7 seats
- M1 or M1G category, and more than 3.5 t is shown in field F.1
- N1 or N1G category, even up to a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t
- Field J is empty, and it is not clear from the document whether the vehicle is a passenger car or a passenger transport vehicle
In practice, this means that a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes can use the e-vignette system in 2026, but usually a D2 entitlement must be purchased for it. A motorhome also falls into category D2 if its maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3.5 tonnes, but according to the vehicle registration certificate it belongs to category N1 or N1G.

The shorter-validity Hungarian vignette prices, which may be sufficient for motorhomes during the summer season, are available in 2026 at the following prices:

What details should you check when buying a Hungarian vignette?
The Hungarian e-vignette is electronic and is linked to the licence plate number and country code, so it is recommended to check the details entered at least twice when purchasing:
- Licence plate number: every character must be correct.
- Country code: for a foreign vehicle, the correct country code must be entered, for example D for Germany.
- Fee category: D1 or D2, based on the vehicle registration certificate.
- Validity date: it should cover the intended travel period.
- Trailer: if the towing vehicle is in toll category D2, a category U entitlement is also required.
In Hungary, the highway vignette must be purchased before using the toll road network. It is also advisable to buy the e-vignette for the selected validity period while planning your trip, while still at home, so you do not have to worry about obtaining the right entitlements during your journey.
Motorhome with a trailer: do you need a separate vignette?
It depends on the category of the motorhome, as the need for an additional e-vignette is determined based on the toll category.
D1 motorhome with a trailer
If the motorhome is in category D1, no separate e-vignette needs to be purchased when towing a trailer or caravan.
D2 motorhome with a trailer
If the motorhome is in category D2, a category U entitlement is also required in addition to the D1 highway vignette if you wish to tow a trailer or caravan. The 2026 price of the category U vignette is the same as the price of the D1 vignette.
In the case of a D2 motorhome with a trailer, the e-vignette cost for a 10-day trip is therefore not HUF 10,040, but a total of HUF 16,940, because the category U entitlement must also be purchased in addition to the D2 vignette.

What happens if I buy a Hungarian vignette in the wrong fee category?
Confusing the D1 and D2 toll categories is not a minor mistake, as a D1 vignette purchased for a D2 motorhome does not fully cover the road use entitlement.
In 2026, the basic surcharge imposed for a missing entitlement is HUF 27,790 if paid within 60 days, and HUF 95,730 if paid later. In the case of a toll category difference, the basic difference surcharge is HUF 15,530, which may increase to HUF 49,190 if paid late.
This is why it is especially important not to select the D1 vignette out of habit, but to always check the details in the motorhome’s vehicle registration certificate.
