Hungary Vignette information 2024- Fee categories, types and validity

In accordance with the legal regulations in effect, the e-vignette must always be purchased for the toll section of the road before driving onto it (practically, this means before travel). Retroactively purchasing a vignette does not mean retroactive entitlement to use of the road, thus, retroactively purchased vignettes are considered unauthorized road use and will result in a penalty.

The 60 minute grace period is an exception. This means that if within 60 minutes of the time road use began, a vignette is purchased, the user will be exempt from the penalty. It is important to note that precise information must be given in order to provide authorization: license plate number, country code, fee category, time of validity.

What to pay attention to when purchasing the online vignette?

In order to avoid the most common user mistakes, pay attention when purchasing:

• the e-vignette for the appropriate vehicle category
• the correct license plate number
• the start date of the validity period, which by default is the date of purchase

Important! Always ensure that the confirmation of a successful purchase is shown in your browser (especially the vignette ID) or that you receive an email confirmation of a successful purchase. If this does not happen, please contact our customer service.

Vehicle types (fee categories)

Highway vignette validity

If you indicate the date of purchase as the date when validity begins, then the vignette validity begins at the time of purchase.

The regional scope of validity for all vignettes is the whole country of Hungary, except the county vignettes, which are yearly vignettes and only valid for the portions of the roads within that county, up to the first exit of the neighboring county.

Validity of highway vignette

Daily (1 day) highway vignette

Valid on all toll roads in Hungary, from the exact time of purchase until midnight on the day of purchase. In the case of advance purchase, it is valid from 0:00 on the day of purchase until midnight.

Weekly (10 days) highway vignette

Valid for the start day indicated by the customer and an additional 9 days, for a total of 10 consecutive calendar days, until 00:00 of the 10th day.

Monthly (1 month) highway vignette

From the start day indicated by the customer to 00:00 of the same (numerical) day of the next month: if there is no day of the same number in the expiration month, then the vignette is valid until 00:00 the last day of the month.

Regional highway vignette

Valid for all the roads of the county indicated by the customer. Valid from the first day of the reference year until 00:00 January 31 of the year following the reference year. In case of purchase within the period of validity, the vignette provides road use authorization from the time of purchase.
Pre-purchase Valid from January 1, 2024 to 00:00 January 31, 2025. Regional vignettes may be purchased simultaneously for several different counties.

Yearly highway vignette

Valid for all toll roads in Hungary. Valid from the first day of the reference year until 00:00 January 31 of the year following the reference year. In case of purchase within the period of validity, the vignette provides road use authorization from the time of purchase.
Pre-purchase Valid from January 1, 2024 to 00:00 January 31, 2025.

Purchase combined vignettes (for several months)

Combined monthly vignettes provide the comfort of the yearly vignette for customers purchasing vignettes during the year. It is important to note that confirmation of the purchase of combined monthly vignettes contains vignette identification for months.

When purchasing combined vignettes, please make sure you pay special attention to CHECKING THE LICENSE PLATE NUMBER, as the fee for amending the license plate number will have to paid for the month 5, month 4, month 3, month 2 vignettes (the fee for amending the license plate number is 1470 Ft per vignette and per character). The multiple fee of amendment is applicable for amendment in the case of sale of the vehicle or the purchase of a new vehicle.

Also, please pay close attention to the START and FINISH of VALIDITY when purchasing combined vignettes. If you indicate the day of purchase as the start day, then validity begins with the time the vignette was purchased.

Payment methods when purchasing

You can pay for your vignettes quickly and conveniently by bank card, via Apple Pay and Google Pay. Please do not forget that you are entitled to use of the highways when you have received confirmation (serial number) of your vignette.

Payment is carried out via the secure payment system of banks Barion, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The system accepts all cards suitable for online payment. The highway vignette is validated immediately after successful payment. The data provided by the customer on the Bank's card acceptance interface is viewed and managed only by the Bank.

Which vignette should I buy?

In order to save money when purchasing highway vignettes for your travels, it is a good idea to plan a year ahead if possible.

1 day vignette

• If you have driven onto the motorway by mistake, you can avoid a fine if you buy within 60 minutes 
• If you are just passing through Hungary
• If you are planning a journey of more than 10 days, you can also use the one-day vignette to cover the cost of the journey, or you can use just two one-day vignettes.

Weekly and monthly vignettes

If the price of the 10-day and monthly vignettes do not reach a sum of  50.000 Forints per year, then it is worth it to purchase the appropriate weekly or monthly vignettes for each journey. These are valid for the whole area of the country for the given period of time. For more than one journey within a 30 day period, the monthly vignette is the better option.

Yearly vignettes

If the price of the 10-day and monthly vignettes exceeds a sum of  50.000 Forints per year, then it is worth it to purchase the yearly vignette even if you will be paying 6-8000 Forints more. The convenience this option provides will be worth the extra expense.

It's more than just costs! If you have a yearly vignette you will not have to worry about it all year or think about choosing less expensive roads or foregoing a trip just because of the vignette price.

County highway vignette

This type of vignette is very advantageous to those who drive mainly within a given region or county throughout the year. In this case, it is worth purchasing the vignettes for the given county (counties) which will be valid for a whole year. If you use sometimes use a different route, then it is still a budget friendly option to buy the vignette for the given period each time.

E-vignette Penalties

If upon inspection the vehicle does not have the appropriate highway sticker, this counts as unauthorized road use and will result in a penalty. The amount of the penalty depends on the fee category and whether payment was carried out within 60 days. There are factors which can decrease the amount of the penalty. If, for example, the fee category of the purchased vignette or maximum 3 characters of the license plate number are erroneous. In these cases you will only need to pay the balance of the penalty, or you may avoid the penalty by paying the fee of amendment.

Modify vignette

Transfer

ransfer of a vignette amy only be carried out at the customer service office of the Center of the National Toll Payment Services Zrt. The fee of transfer is 1470 Ft. Transfer is possible in the following cases:

• the vehicle is sold – you will need the documents of sale and the documents connected to the vignette
• change of license plate number – if the change of license plate number is mandated by law, it is free of charge
• theft/damage beyond repair– based on certification by police or insurance company
• erroneous fee category– within the period of validity
• erroneous license plate number - up to 3 characters and if 0 is written instead of O or vice versa, amendment is free of charge
• erroneous country code

Repurchase

In the case of double purchase if validity has not yet begun.

Inspection!

You may only drive onto the highway with a valid vignette!

Payment of the road use fee may be inspected at any point of the toll road electronically based on license plate number without stopping the vehicles.
In your own interest, please keep the control slip (if you have used the electronic service, this means the confirmation containing the vignette serial number) for three years after expiration.

When purchasing a highway vignette, financial performance in and of itself does not automatically mean a right to use the highways. You will need a valid vignette serial number in every case for road use authorization.

Unauthorized road use

If upon a spot-check or an electronic inspection based on license plate number, the vehicle does not have valid authorization, or in the case of electronic purchase, the user does not have confirmation/receipt sent by the service provider, then the driver of the vehicle is obligated to pay the penalty for the inspected vehicle according to the vehicle's fee category.
