Motorways and expressways in Hungary are typically classified as toll roads. You can buy an electronic toll vignette before you drive onto the toll road!

In accordance with the legal regulations in effect, the e-vignette must always be purchased for the toll section of the road before driving onto it (practically, this means before travel). Retroactively purchasing a vignette does not mean retroactive entitlement to use of the road, thus, retroactively purchased vignettes are considered unauthorized road use and will result in a penalty.

The 60 minute grace period is an exception. This means that if within 60 minutes of the time road use began, a vignette is purchased, the user will be exempt from the penalty. It is important to note that precise information must be given in order to provide authorization: license plate number, country code, fee category, time of validity.

Vignette types and valitidy period

Daily

1 day e-vignette:

Valid on all toll roads in Hungary, from the exact time of purchase until midnight on the day of purchase. In the case of advance purchase, it is valid from 0:00 on the day of purchase until midnight.

Weekly

10 days e-vignette:

This vignette is valid from the beginning date specified by the customer and an additional 9 days, for a total of 10 consecutive calendar days until 24:00 hours of the 10th day.

Monthly

1 month e-vignette:

This vignette is valid from the beginning date specified by the customer until 24:00 hours on the corresponding date in the next month. If this date is missing in the month in which the vignette expires, the vignette is valid until 24:00 hours of the last day of that month.

Regional

Regional e-vignette:

This vignette is valid for all the roads of the given region from the purchase date until midnight January 31 of the next year. Vignettes valid for several counties can be purchased at the same time.

Yearly

1 year e-vignette:

This vignette is valid from the purchase date until midnight on January 31 of the following year. The 1 year vignette is valid from the date of purchase; it does not provide authorization retroactively.

Fee categories for Hungary Vignettes

In Hungary, the e-vignette system covers passenger cars (and their trailers), motorcycles and lorries up to 3.5 tonnes, all of which can be purchased with daily, weekly, monthly and annual county or national vignettes.

The categories of vehicles in the vignette system are based on the official entry in the registration certificate. The number of persons that can be carried in a vehicle is determined by the official entry on the registration document ('S.1.' - number of seats with driver) and not by the number of seats currently visible in the vehicle.
