There will be no convenience fee for purchasing Hungarian highway vignettes
2025. 08. 31. 11:39
Starting from September 1, convenience fees will be prohibited for Hungarian vignettes, meaning that highway vignettes in Hungary can be purchased at a uniform, government-regulated price. No additional charges may be applied either by offline or online sellers. However, there may still be insecure websites that charge significant amounts for purchases, so it is advisable to buy only from official websites, which can be most easily identified by the “Official Reseller of the National Mobile Payment System” logo.
As of September 1, the convenience fee in Hungarian highway vignette sales will be abolished, in accordance with Act LVI of 2025. This means that not only at fuel stations, but also when buying Hungarian vignettes through online providers, no extra fee will be charged. However, it is worth being cautious, as there may still be websites that charge substantial amounts for purchases. Therefore, we recommend that drivers only purchase vignettes through websites or mobile applications where they can see the “Official Reseller of the National Mobile Payment System” logo, such as hungary-vignette.eu.
Additional services with highway vignette purchases
Since online providers will now receive commissions after purchases, a significant transformation is expected in Hungarian highway vignette sales, and drivers may be the biggest beneficiaries. In the future, we also plan to introduce optional additional services, tailored to the previously expressed needs and expectations of customers.
On the hungary-vignette.eu website, we have always placed great importance on offering a wide range of free extra services. These include 0-24 customer support, a multilingual website and service interface, up-to-date information about domestic and European traffic changes and updates, and an available vignette planner.
Expected impact of the abolition of the convenience fee
According to our previous survey on fines, the share of fuel station purchases has been steadily declining in recent years, despite the fact that there was no convenience fee for physical purchases. However, the risk of fines was higher in such cases due to a greater chance of errors—such as incorrect license plate numbers, wrong dates, or lost or damaged receipts. In contrast, invoices received digitally and email confirmations of vignette validity are easy to retrieve, and online purchases also eliminate the need to wait in line. All these benefits—and additional services—will be available free of charge from September onwards due to the removal of the convenience fee, so even more people are expected to switch to online purchasing.
This is, in fact, one of the goals of abolishing the convenience fee. Decision-makers expect that more people will choose to travel via highways, which will naturally be supported by the more convenient and now more affordable purchasing process made possible by eliminating the convenience fee.
